Ever since I got to Philly last summer, I have always been concerned about the biking condition in the city. Although walkscore.com rates Center City very high bike score, it is in fact very crowded and difficult to bike. From my experience, I was not satisfied with how the walkscore.com evaluates the bike score in Philadelphia or the Google Map’s bike route recommendation. I hope to use my personal experience and open source data to help improve the route recommendation.

First, I started by creating a base layer for bike scores. This layer is a weighted overlay of five criteria that are proxies to the riding experience. They are

  1. Lane Type
  2. Slope
  3. Crash Density
  4. Connectivity
  5. Intersection Control Density

Second, Weight formula
